Commitment to Achieving Net Zero
Medloop is committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with the UK Government’s targets. As a predominantly remote software company, we are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our commitment and actions to reduce emissions in areas we can control.
Baseline and Current Emissions Overview
Medloop’s carbon emissions are primarily associated with:
- Cloud computing and data storage
- Remote working infrastructure (home office energy usage)
- Business travel
- IT equipment and infrastructure
We are in the process of calculating our baseline emissions for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3, which will be completed by Q4 2024. Once established, this baseline will guide future reduction targets and ensure accurate tracking of emissions reductions across the company.
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
- Medloop has minimal Scope 1 emissions, as we operate remotely and do not maintain physical office spaces or vehicle fleets.
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Energy
- Indirect emissions from energy use are tied to home office energy consumption by our employees. We are encouraging energy-efficient practices and exploring ways to reduce this further.
Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions
- The majority of Medloop’s emissions fall under Scope 3, including:
- Cloud computing and data centre use
- Business travel (minimised due to remote work)
- IT equipment usage and disposal
Carbon Reduction Targets
Medloop has set a target to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2030, with a specific focus on reducing Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. Our reduction efforts will be focused on optimising cloud computing practices, minimising business travel, and promoting energy efficiency in employee home offices.
Key Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Medloop is implementing the following initiatives to meet our carbon reduction targets:
- Cloud Computing Optimisation:
- Green Cloud Providers: Prioritise cloud services from providers committed to using renewable energy in their data centres.
- Optimised Resource Use: Regular audits of cloud infrastructure to reduce unnecessary resource consumption and ensure efficient server utilisation.
- Energy Efficiency in Home Offices:
- Provide employees with guidelines to minimise energy consumption, such as using energy-efficient devices, optimising heating/cooling, and reducing idle electronics usage.
- Explore partnerships with energy providers to offer staff discounts on renewable energy tariffs for home offices.
- Minimising Business Travel:
- Continue to prioritise virtual meetings over in-person meetings to reduce travel-related emissions.
- For essential travel, prioritise eco-friendly transportation (e.g., trains over flights) and offset emissions through certified carbon offset programmes.
- Sustainable Equipment Lifecycle:
- Extend the lifecycle of IT equipment by promoting repair and reuse.
- Implement a responsible disposal and recycling programme to prevent electronic waste from ending up in landfills.
- Carbon Offsetting:
- For emissions that cannot be avoided (e.g., cloud computing and essential business travel), Medloop will invest in certified carbon offset projects.
- Employee Engagement and Awareness:
- Regular employee engagement through sustainability initiatives, including virtual workshops on energy conservation and low-carbon lifestyle changes.
Monitoring and Reporting
Medloop will track and report on our carbon reduction efforts annually, measuring progress against our targets. Key metrics will include:
- Annual emissions assessments: To measure reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
- Public reporting: Updates on emissions reduction progress will be made available on our website for transparency and accountability.
- Annual reviews: Regular reviews of cloud computing, business travel, and home office energy consumption will help refine our reduction strategies.
By implementing these initiatives and regularly monitoring our progress, Medloop is committed to achieving meaningful emissions reductions and contributing to the UK’s Net Zero target by 2050.
Future Considerations
As Medloop grows, we will continue exploring new ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Potential future actions include:
- Investing in renewable energy credits for cloud computing needs.
- Collaborating with partners and clients that share our commitment to sustainability
